The food is the star of Thanksgiving dinner, but after putting in so many hours to make the perfect meal, you deserve the perfect wine* to pair it with! No matter what type of feast you prepare, here are winning wine combinations for this season.
Bold fruit and high acidity work very well with turkey – much the way cranberry sauce does. Sweet and salty holiday ham is also best paired with a sweeter wine. Try a New World Riesling or a White Zinfandel. Sparkling Roses are also a great option.
Lighter grapes like Pinot Noir and Beaujolais are the more popular choices when pairing reds with poultry. For lighter Pinots, look to Oregon. For richer versions, try California or Chile.
About New Beaujolais or “Beaujolais Nouveau”
In France, we celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day on the third Thursday of November with fireworks, music and festivals. It is the world’s best-known wine party – the wine is released one minute after midnight just weeks after the wine’s grapes have been harvested. What to avoid
Anything too heavy or overly dry is best reserved for very juicy meats and not a good match for Thanksgiving. Heavy tannins are also a bad combination with cranberry sauce and anything sweet so best to steer clear.
